Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. There are at least five virus types that cause the disease. One of the types of viruses is the B virus. More than 1 million individuals are carriers of the hepatitis B virus in the United States. About 200,000 individuals contract this disease each year. Certain racial and ethnic groups have higher rates of infection, including blacks, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and Native Americans.
