Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. This type of surgery is done to remove a gallbladder that has formed stones, also known as cholelithiasis. These stones can block the duct leading from the gallbladder to the common bile duct. This blockage results in infection, or cholecystitis, and/or pain. If stones are present with any of these symptoms, a cholecystectomy is likely to be recommended.
